Pitman, NJ, June 18, 2013 - Medical-surgical nurses need laser sharp critical-thinking skills and a sweeping range of nursing knowledge, so ongoing education is a top priority.

Recognizing this, the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN) has broadened its options to deliver education to nurses this year for its 22nd Annual Convention. Nurses and other health care professionals can attend onsite September 26-29, 2013, at The Gaylord Opryland Resort in Nashville, TN, or they can patch in to a live video broadcast from their home or workplace.

“The video broadcasts are brand new this year, and we are very excited about them” said AMSN President Kathy Lattavo, MSN, RN, CNS-MS, CMSRN, RN-BC, ACNS-BC. “Not everyone can afford to travel or take time off, so this new option is another way to bring education right to people’s doorsteps.”

Lattavo said medical-surgical nurses can also gather in groups at their facilities to watch, thanks to site licenses that are available for the live broadcasts. Thirteen sessions, as well as the major presentations and the two-day Certification Review Course, will be broadcast.

Supplementing the sessions further, AMSN has an Online Library that is constantly updated. Any health care professional can use this resource, and convention attendees get free access to the sessions afterward so they can take presentations they may have missed. Those who register for the live broadcasts also get free access in the library for the broadcasted courses.

The 2013 convention features sessions on a wide variety of clinical, professional, and leadership topics. Participants will earn Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) contact hours, and those who attend in Nashville will also enjoy networking with colleagues at special events, visiting with vendors in the exhibit hall, and viewing poster presentations.

Program and Highlights
Pre-convention workshops will be offered Wednesday and Thursday, September 25 and 26. The two-day Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification Review Course will prepare nurses for the Certified Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (CMSRN®) certification exam to be offered onsite later.

The convention will officially begin Thursday, September 26, with the Opening General Session by nursing leader and author Gloria Ferraro Donnelly, PhD, RN, FAAN. Dr. Donnelly’s session is entitled “Not Your Grandmother’s Health Care System,” and she will describe through a humorous lens the winding transformative path of America’s health care system.

On Friday, September 27, nursing researcher and quality care expert Mary Naylor, PhD, RN, FAAN, will deliver the convention’s Keynote Address. She will discuss the science related to transitional care and how to translate research findings into daily practice.

Concurrent sessions will run from Friday through Sunday, September 29. Topics include:

  • Physician/Nurse Conflict: Have We Really Made Any Progress?
  • New Anticoagulants – A Pharmacology Update
  • The Patient Caring Touch System: How the Army Transformed Professional Nursing Practice
  • How to Identify and Treat Acute Electrolyte Disorders
  • Patient Safety and Quality Care

On Saturday, September 28, AMSN will again hold one of the convention’s most popular sessions: an interactive Town Hall. The meeting will be facilitated by Jane Lacovara, MSN, RN, CMSRN. The discussion will focus on transitions of care as well as outcomes from Dr. Naylor’s Keynote Address on the same topic.

Also on Saturday, AMSN will host an ice cream social to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification Board (MSNCB) and the 17,000 nurses who have earned their Certified Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (CMSRN®) credential.

Certification Exam
MSNCB will offer the CMSRN certification exam onsite at the convention on Monday, September 30, 2013. A separate application and registration fee are required for the exam. To download an application, visit www.msncb.org. The application deadline is August 1, 2013.
